In 1978, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC), Chinese Academy of Sciences, was accredited by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to grant master's degrees, and authorized to grant doctoral degrees in 2004. In 2020, GIEC co-established the School of Energy Science and Engineering with University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) as a collaborative school that combines research with graduate education. Since 2021, all graduate students recruited through GIEC have been registered under USTC.
