Research Areas

The Ocean Energy Research Team was established in 1979, focusing primarily on ocean wave energy research and development and the utilization of renewable energy on islands. The current 28 team staff are mainly comprising mid-career and senior personnel, including 3 researchers, 3 associate researchers, 5 senior engineers, 5 special research assistants, 1 assistant researcher, 1 postdoctoral researcher, 1 research intern, 4 engineers, 4 technicians, and 1 financial assistant. The team educates master’s students in Fluid Machinery and Fluid Power Engineering and doctoral students in Thermal Engineering, with 16 graduate students currently pursuing studies. The Ocean Energy Research Laboratory covers an area of nearly 400 square meters and is equipped with facilities such as a wave-making tank, a reciprocating flow turbine test rig, a six-degree-of-freedom dynamic test platform, a static-dynamic test platform, a hydraulic energy conversion test platform, and a platform for fabricating special marine energy equipment components. Since the 1990s, the team has undertaken numerous national science and technology key projects, science and technology support projects, 863 projects, national marine renewable energy special funds, projects under the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Strategic Priority Program, the National Key R&D Program, and National Natural Science Foundation projects.

In recent years, with support from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team has achieved breakthrough progress in efficient and stable power generation from ocean waves. The Sharp Eagle wave energy technology invented by the team, has obtained patents in China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and PCT, demonstrating excellent hydrodynamic performance and high conversion efficiency at a world-class level. With demonstration of grid-connected power supply for near- and far-shore islands, reliability has been significantly improved. The ocean-instrument aerodynamic and hydraulic wave energy power supply device can sustainably convert wave energy into long-term onboard power for various ocean instruments, products have been deployed in multiple locations in the Pearl River Estuary and have operated normally through several typhoons. Based on the Sharp Eagle wave energy technology and with independent intellectual property rights, the deep-sea aquaculture platform has received multiple national patents and certifications from China and France classification societies, and orders for equipment have been placed in seven coastal provinces to support marine ranching. The deep-sea mining clean-energy supply system, under invention patent protection, has been authorized in multiple countries.

Currently, the Ocean Energy Research Team is intensifying collaboration with major state-owned enterprises and large groups to accelerate the development of an integrated energy platform (“wave-wind-light-storage”) and offshore floating energy island research and construction, providing clean-energy technologies and solutions for the sustainable development of offshore regions.

Key Research Platforms & Facilities

·Wave-Making Pool: with width of 1.2 meters, height of 1.2 meters, length of 42 meters and , with a maximum wave-making depth of 1 meter, can be used for wave simulation experiments, offshore engineering model experiments, wave energy device experiments, etc.

· Reciprocating Flow turbine Test Stand: uses the water column oscillation in the air chamber to form reciprocating airflow and drive the turbine to generate electricity, can measure parameters of speed, air pressure, voltage, current and period.

·hydraulic energy conversion system: 1:1 replica of the wave power generation device's internal hydraulic conversion system enables performance testing of the hydraulic energy conversion system through simulated wave energy input.

·Authentic commercial software: covering comprehensive stability analysis, hydrodynamic calculations, finite element analysis, and mooring calculations, with expertise in the design of wave energy devices and offshore aquaculture platforms, including conceptual, basic, and detailed design capabilities.


Signature Achievements

· Megawatt-level Wave Power Generation Device “Nankun”: Six major research achievements have been made, including resource assessment and site selection, optimization of shape of absorbing floating body, multi-stage energy conversion of wave-liquid-electricity, typhoon-resistant anchoring, first megawatt-class device, and stable operation and grid connection in the open sea.

· Wave-Wind-Solar and Energy Storage Integrated Energy Security System: to power isolated islands, and support island sustainable development with ocean clean energy.
