Background and Mission

In response to the national strategic goals of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” and the urgent need to build a new energy system, the Distributed Generation and Microgrid Technology Research Team is dedicated to advancing the integration of distributed renewable energy and smart grid technologies. The team’s mission is to address the core challenges in the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient modern energy system. By focusing on the deep integration of digital technology with energy systems, the team aims to develop innovative solutions for efficient, reliable, and intelligent microgrid operation, contributing significantly to China’s energy transition and sustainable development .


Main Research Directions

The team’s research encompasses a comprehensive range of applied fundamental studies and key technology development in distributed generation and microgrids. Its core research areas include:

· Renewable Energy-based Microgrid System Control Technology: Research on photovoltaic and wind power generation theories and technologies, related power conversion devices and control technologies, and distributed generation microgrid system control.

·Energy Storage Technology and Systems: Development of advanced energy storage devices, battery management systems (BMS), large-scale battery pack integration technology, and combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems.

· Advanced Energy Storage Materials and Device Integration: Research and development of novel, high-safety, high-energy-density electrolyte and electrode materials, as well as the integration and application development of energy storage devices like lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.

·Integrated Optimization of Distributed Multi-energy Complementary Microgrid Systems: Research on coordinated control technologies for complementary power generation from various renewable energy sources, optimization of economic operation control, and development of energy management systems (EMS) .

· Microgrid System Planning and Simulation, High-efficiency Power Electronic Control Devices, and Microgrid Energy Management Systems.


Distinctive Features and Advantages

The team is distinguished by its strong interdisciplinary approach, integrating expertise from electrical engineering, control engineering, thermal engineering, and materials science . It operates key provincial and municipal research platforms, including the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Research Center for Distributed Energy Storage and Smart Microgrid and the Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Distributed Generation and Microgrid Technology, which provide robust infrastructure for R&D and talent cultivation . With over 20 years of experience led by Professor SHU Jie, the team has accumulated deep expertise in photovoltaic power generation, distributed smart microgrids, new energy storage, and integrated energy systems . Its research spans from fundamental theory to practical engineering applications and demonstration projects, such as island-based MW-level multi-energy complementary distributed microgrids.


Goals and Impact

The team’s overarching goal is to become a leading platform for applied basic research, key technology development, talent aggregation, and industrial application promotion in the field of distributed generation microgrids and efficient energy storage . Its scientific and technological impact is evidenced by its leadership in major national projects like the Smart Grid National S&T Major Project and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Strategic Priority Research Program . Economically and socially, the team’s work supports the development of independent renewable energy systems for islands and rural areas, reduces reliance on diesel generation, promotes industrial and agricultural microgrids, and contributes to building low-carbon communities and achieving carbon neutrality goals . The team also serves as an important think tank for government and enterprise decision-making in energy strategy .
