Research Areas

The team has been focusing on the research of energy and resource utilization of agricultural and forestry waste for a long time. Since the "Twelfth Five Year Plan", he has presided over and undertaken more than 10 major projects such as national 973863, key research and development programs, and Chinese Academy of Sciences pilot projects. At present, the above projects have passed the examination and acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other relevant departments, except for those under implementation. With the support of the project, the research team has completed the exploration of multiple technical routes for the directional synthesis of sustainable aviation fuel from lignocellulosic raw materials, and formed a process plan for the co production of high-value chemicals (such as acetic acid, furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, etc.) from cellulose based sustainable aviation fuel by water-based catalysis with platform molecules as the core. The first domestic demonstration device for the preparation of lignocellulosic based sustainable aviation fuel by water-based catalysis has been built and successfully achieved continuous and stable operation. The system energy efficiency has significantly improved to 36.8%, effectively promoting the engineering scaling up and feasibility verification of biomass aviation fuel and chemical synthesis technology. The related technical achievement "Cellulose Bio Aviation Fuel Technology" won the United Nations "Blue Sky Award" and the first prize of "Technical Invention" in the 2018 Guangdong Science and Technology Award.

Key esearch Platforms & Facilities

· The National Biofuel Research and Development Center, home to the country's first thousand-ton-scale aqueous-phase catalytic biomass-based aviation fuel demonstration unit.

·The laboratory is equipped with over a dozen advanced analytical instruments, including high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography (6units), in-situ infrared spectrometers, chemical adsorption analyzers, mass spectrometers, and more. It has procured or assembled over 30 types of high-pressure reactors, such as fixed-bed reactors and industrial single-tube reactors. Demonstration facilities for biomass gasification-based DME production, a 100-ton-scale biomass aqueous-phase reforming unit for bio-gasoline, and a synthetic plant for aviation kerosene production from complete biomass utilization have been established in Shandong, Liaoning, Guangdong, and other regions.


Signature Achievements

·In the field of precise separation and high-value conversion of biomass full components, over 40 national and provincial key projects as well as international collaborative projects have been led, resulting in more than 10 national and provincial awards, over 50 authorized invention patents, and over 200 related research papers published.

· A novel method for producing small-molecule carboxylic acids and fuel chemicals via aqueous-phase reforming of agricultural and forestry waste biomass based on three-element separation was innovatively proposed.

· Developed an in-situ extraction-oxidative depolymerization technology system based on the "lignin priority" strategy.

· Established a hundred-ton-scale equipment system for the continuous oxidative depolymerization of lignin to produce monophenolic chemicals.

·The world's first kiloton-scale demonstration system for the catalytic preparation of bio-based chemicals from straw in the aqueous phase was established.


International Collaboration

The project team has collaborated with world-renowned universities such as the University of Leuven, University of Groningen, University of Wisconsin Madison, and Queensland University of Technology in the field of biomass waste energy and high-value utilization.
