Research Areas

The Energy Storage Technology Team was founded by Professor Feng Ziping in 2003. Our team currently comprises four professors, one associate professor, three senior engineers, one senior technician, eight engineers, and more than 30 doctoral and master’s students, forming a well-structured talent pool with a balanced age distribution and complementary disciplinary expertise.

Our team’s main research areas include large-scale energy storage and active regulation, distributed energy systems, advanced industrial heat pumps, energy conservation and decarbonization in industrial processes, and smart energy management technologies. Focusing on key scientific challenges and critical “bottleneck” technologies in the industry, we carries out interdisciplinary research and collaborative innovation spanning key materials, technological advancement in energy equipment, and system-level integration of control systems. Through more than two decades of dedicated development, our team has gradually forged a distinctive "Energy Storage Approach"—a research philosophy characterized by demand orientation and continuous adaptation to evolving technological and societal needs.”

By the end of 2025, we have published over 230 research papers and been granted more than 200 patents. The team had undertaken over 180 research projects of various types, including more than 40 commissioned projects for large enterprises, and had trained over 50 doctoral and Master's graduates for the industry. Our team has maintained long-term exchanges with relevant research institutions in Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Canada, Australia, Chile, and other countries, actively promoting international collaboration. By doing so, the team establishes a cooperative network for scientific research and technology transfer and commercialization both domestically and internationally.

Our team will continue to uphold its original mission of keeping national priorities at heart and shouldering national responsibilities, focusing on core energy storage technologies and making sustained contributions to the development of renewable energy technologies in China.

International Collaboration

Professor Feng Ziping, head of the Advanced Energy Storage Technology team, has many years of aboard study and work experience in Europe and Japan, which has created favorable conditions for the team’s international collaboration. Over the years, the team has maintained close ties and cooperation with Japanese academia and industry, and has established an international network for academic exchange and personnel interaction with partners in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and other countries.

Professor Song Wenji, previously conducted academic exchanges as a visiting scholar at the University of Birmingham, UK. Building on the jointly established China–UK International Joint Research and Development Center for Energy Storage Technology, he further deepened and expanded international collaboration, including participation in EU Horizon 2020 (H2020) projects, leading the Intergovernmental Science and Technology Cooperation Project under the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and securing support from the Ministry of Science and Technology Foreign Expert Program (collaborating with Professor Svetlana Ushake, University of Antofagasta, Chile).

Professor Lin Wenye earned his PhD from the University of Wollongong, Australia, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research in Australia and Germany. During his time in Germany under the Humboldt Research Fellowship, he established close academic exchange and collaboration with partners in Australia and EU countries. Over the past three years since joining the team, he has led multiple international cooperation projects, including the CAS-ANSO International Conference Funding Program and the Chinese Academy of Sciences International Fellowship Program (PIFI).

Professor Qiao Qingyao did his PhD at the School of Engineering, University of Manchester, UK, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong. During this period, he fostered close academic exchanges and collaborative partnerships with research institutions across the UK and Hong Kong. Currently, Professor Qiao leads international cooperation initiatives—including the CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI)—and actively advances deeper, more substantive global academic engagement and collaborative innovation.
