To actively respond to the national initiative of “Comprehensive Deepening of Science and Technology System Reform”, as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ requirement to “Deepen the Reform of Research Organization Patterns and Accelerate the Establishment of an Effective Collaborative Tackling Mechanism that Leverages Systemic and Institutional Strengths,” based on the institute’s relevant technical foundations and strengths, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion has established the Offshore Energy Research Center in response to national plans for developing the South China Sea, aligning with current trends in marine science and industry development.

The center brings together four leading research teams of Solar Energy, Ocean Energy, Hydrogen Production and Utilization, and Distributed Micro-grid Technology. The center conducts technical innovation and application in areas including new solar photovoltaic materials and solar-thermal utilization, wave energy technology and offshore integrated energy platform technologies, renewable hydrogen production and hydrogen fuel cell technology, multi-energy renewable power systems and new power systems. Building on the above and for further leveraging large-scale offshore wave energy platform technology, the center integrates advanced photovoltaic materials and renewable hydrogen production technologies to create an offshore multi-energy complementary system and develop new offshore energy absorption scenarios, distributed micro-grid technology is then employed as the key support for power output scheduling, forming a complete technological chain from offshore energy development to effective application.

Under the guidance of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Offshore Energy Research Center of Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion constructs a research collaboration model of “independent operation at the unit level, united and concerted tackling at the group level,” fully leveraging existing technical strengths to generate synergy and support the development of deep-sea renewable energy and island-reef energy security, thereby providing effective assistance for marine economic development, optimization of island-reef energy structures, the emergence of new maritime productivity, and the comprehensive advancement of the “strong ocean nation” strategy.
