Research Centers
The Center for Geothermal and Energy Conservation Technology is strategically aligned with China’s national "Dual Carbon" goals: peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. With the efficient utilization of energy as its core objective, the Center addresses critical scientific challenges and industrial bottlenecks within the construction and manufacturing sectors. Our work spans the full innovation chain—from fundamental applied research and key technological breakthroughs to the large-scale integrated demonstration of low-carbon solutions. Our mission is to leverage a high-level, multidisciplinary research team to pioneer the development of renewable energy systems that are highly efficient, secure, and economically viable.
The Center primarily encompasses three research directions, establishing a comprehensive matrix that spans basic theory to engineering applications:
1. High-Efficiency Geothermal Energy Development and Comprehensive Utilization
This direction focuses on key technologies such as medium-to-low temperature geothermal power generation, refrigeration, heat pumps, downhole-enhanced heat transfer, and super-long gravity heat pipe geothermal extraction. It extends to industrial waste heat utilization and regional smart energy planning. Additionally, researchers are dedicated to the thermochemical conversion kinetics of novel fuels and new-concept combustion technologies, providing core support for efficient geothermal resource acquisition and the optimized operation of energy systems.
2. Data Center Energy-Saving Technologies
This area is committed to solving the heat dissipation and energy consumption challenges of high-demand infrastructure, with an emphasis on high-efficiency refrigeration, heat pump technologies, and specialized energy-saving solutions for data centers. To complement operational efficiency, the Center conducts safety testing for lithium-ion batteries and develops secure electrolytes to ensure the intrinsic safety of energy storage systems. Furthermore, research covers the application of energy conversion materials and catalytic technologies in environmental governance, as well as high-quality preservation and energy-saving technologies for cold-chain logistics, fostering a comprehensive green, low-carbon ecosystem.
3. Zero-Carbon/Low-Carbon Integrated Energy Systems for Industrial Parks
This direction integrates large-scale electricity, cold, and heat storage with district cooling and heating technologies to provide stable energy transfer and supply guarantees for industrial parks. Through the interdisciplinary study of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Engineering Thermophysics, the Center conducts integrated demonstrations of energy-saving technologies for zero-carbon and low-carbon buildings. Simultaneously, industrial thermal process optimization models are utilized to enhance overall energy efficiency. Combined with solar thermal utilization and high-efficiency power systems, these efforts aim to construct multi-energy complementary regional smart energy planning schemes.
Building on a profound academic heritage and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the Center hosts several provincial and ministerial innovation platforms, including the Guangdong Engineering Research Center for Data Center Energy Conservation. We maintain an international leadership position in data center efficiency, zero-carbon building technologies, and high-efficiency geothermal conversion. Our researchers continue to push the boundaries of collaborative innovation across the fields of thermal power, environmental science, refrigeration, and chemical engineering.
