President of British GEOTEK Ltd Visited Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion

2009-08-04

On July 29th, 2009, Dr. Peter John Schultheiss, the President and Chief Scientist of British GEOTEK Ltd, and Dr. Melanie Ellen Holland, the Research Scientist of British GEOTEK Ltd, visited Guangzhou Center for Gas Hydrate Research (GCGHR) and Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC), Chinese Academy of Sciences.

During the visit, Dr. Nengyou Wu briefed the visiting experts on the research field, direction and progress of GIEC and GCGHR. And then, Dr. Schultheiss made a wonderful presentation titled Pressure Core Analysis: the Keystone of a Gas Hydrate Expedition. Combining with the actual situation of hydrate drilling around the world, He introduced the integrated test and analysis of core in drilling gas hydrate and its application on hydrate occurrence patterns, formation mechanism and calculation of saturation. Nearly 40 scientists and graduate students from GIEC and Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIG) attended the workshop, and lively discussed the related issues. After the presentation, accompanied with Drs. Nengyou Wu, Duofu Chen, Xaiosen Li and Deqing Liang, the experts visited GCGHR and took a close look at of the gas hydrate facilities. The two sides discussed possibilities for future cooperation. The visiting experts expressed their high appreciation of high level experimental synthesis study on gas hydrate, which are carried by the researchers at GCGHR.

With this visit, Dr. Schultheiss and Dr. Holland made valuable suggestions about the research direction of gas hydrate for GIEC, and this visiting lays a solid foundation for future cooperation between both sides.

British GEOTEK Ltd is the most famous manufacture for core integrated test system and also well known as the research institution for field drilling services. Dr. Schultheiss and Dr. Holland have participated in the Leg 204 of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Leg 311 of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), the gas hydrate drilling expeditions of Joint Industry Plan (JIP) in Gulf of Mexico in 2005, and as well as national gas hydrate program of India, China and Korea. They are rich experience in gas hydrate core testing and geological research.
