The academic lecture on Biomass Energy

  On Nov. 30, the seventh internal academic lecture organized by Key Lab. was held in conference room 907, New Energy Building, GIEC. Dr. Haibing Li (the chief scientist, also the leader of the waster treatment and utilization research group) and Dr. Xiuli Yin (the leader of the biomass thermal-chemical conversion technologies group) were invited to give a wonderful presentation, respectively. The titles of the presentations are “waste treatment technology and current situation” and “biomass gasification technology and developing trend”. More than 70 researches and students attended the conference.
  In Dr. Li’s presentation, the major waste treatment technologies, which include landfill、 composting and incineration, were illustrated in detail. Meanwhile, in comparison with the waste treatment technologies being used in Canada、Japan、Italia and Guangzhou of China and the corresponding operating status, Dr. Li analyzed their technical characteristics and differences. Dr.Li also introduced the operating status of the waste treatment plants both at home and abroad, from which we could observe the good momentum of development of domestic waste treatment. More than that, Dr. Li gave an explanation on how to properly choose waste treatment technology as well. In the end, according to the characteristics of domestic waste, which has high amount of leftover、low heat value and high water content, Dr. Li suggested that a comprehensive waste treatment technology is the best choice.
  In Dr. Yin’s presentation, two utilization platforms of biomass, which is sugar platform and syngas platform, were introduced briefly at the beginning. Following that, Dr. Yin introduced the comprehensive utilization route of biomass. She indicated that biomass gasification technology is closely related to our energy demand. Dr. Yin also gave an explanation about the variety of biomass resources and their distribution conditions. The correlations between characteristics of biomass resource and technologies of biomass utilization were demonstrated. Then, Dr. Yin introduced the utilization technologies of biomass gasification; especially emphasized the technology of biomass gasification power generation and its developing history was reviewed. Apart from the introduction of general utilization technologies of biomass, the new technologies were also presented in her lecture. In the end, she illustrated the various types of gasfiers and put forward her characteristic remarks regarding the developing trend of biomass gasification technology.
