Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) Workshop Held in Guangzhou
Enhanced geothermal systems workshop was held in Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC) on April 21. It is first time in China to organize the EGS experts both from USA and China together to discuses EGS issues.
Professor Wu Nengyou, from GIEC, presided over the workshop. Professor Wu Chuangzhi, president of GIEC, made an opening speech, in which he demonstrated the necessity and significance of conducting EGS research in China from different points of view, including domestic strategic and industrial development requirements, renewable energy development situation and technical bottleneck, and so on.
During the workshop, academician Wang Jiyang (Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Science), Professor Yushu Wu (Colorado School of Mine of USA) and Professor Huihai Liu (Lawrene Berkeley National Laboratory of USA) delivered academic lectures as specially invited speakers. The exploitation and utilization situation of deep geothermal energy in China, the technical challenges and modeling investigations of EGS and EGS Research at Berkeley Laboratory were introduced. Experts in the workshop made a deep discussion about research goal of EGS in China, key science and technology issues and research orientations.
It was agreed that it is very important to get support from government as soon as possible in order to enhance the EGS research in China, especially on resource potential evaluation, exploitation mode, production capacity analysis and techno-economy evaluation. Moreover, some specific techniques needed to be solved were indicated as well. The whole work will provide solid basis for the development and utilization of EGS in China.
Over 30 experts from USA, related institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences and enterprises attended the workshop.
