Professor Ho-Shing Yu from National Taiwan University Visits GIEC

2013-01-15

During Jan. 06th-09th, Prof. Ho-Shing Yu and Ph. D Kan-His Hsiung from Institute of Oceanography, National Taiwan University, paid a visit to GuangZhou Insitute of Energy Conversion (GIEC).

Prof. Yu and Dr. Hsiung gave two wonderful presentations about Taiwan Foreland Basin and Kaoping Submarine Canyon, respectively. Moreover, Prof. Yu shared his experiences with young scientists and graduate students in writing scientific papers.

After the lectures, the two researchers discussed some academic topics with the young scientists of the Key Laboratory of Renewable Energy and Gas Hydrate, including source to sink system, the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the continental basins in the Northern South China Sea, the sediments transport and dispersal system, the forming mechanism of the Central Canyon System in Qiongdongnan Basin and so on. Throughout this discussion, both sides reached a consensus to conduct a joint scientific study on the comparison between the Central Canyon in Qiongdongnan Basin and the Kaoping Canyon in Taiwan. The expected goal of this work is to establish the longitudinal sediment transport models in the different geological settings, based on the description and interpretation of these two submarine canyons.

This academic exchange achieved the great potential of cooperation between GIEC and Institute of Oceanography, National Taiwan University. The second exchange was proposed to hold during May or June this year in Taiwan.
