Famous Gas Hydrate Expert Dr. Timothy S. Collett Took a Visit to GIEC

2014-07-22

On 21 July, 2014at the invitation of Key Laboratory of Gas Hydrate, Guangzhou Center for Gas Hydrate Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the famous gas hydrate expert Dr. Timothy S. Collett took a visit to Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC), CAS. Dr. Nengyou Wu, the Deputy Director General of GIEC, and Drs. Xiaosen Li and Deqing Liang had a welcome reception and discussed with Dr. Collett.

Dr. Collett gave an excellent presentation titled Reservoir Controls on the Occurrence and Production of Gas Hydrates in Nature to more than 50 scientists and students. The primary objective of this presentation is to review the geologic controls on the occurrence and producibility of gas hydrate in known accumulations. First of all, the gas hydrate petroleum system, particularly the reservoir controls on concentrated gas hydrate accumulations from modeling and field studies, reservoir controls on the production of gas hydrate from production testing and modeling were discussed by Dr. Collett. Then Dr. Collett detail explained the gas hydrate reservoir systems based on the investigation and production testing results of Cascadia Continental Margin IODP Expedition 311, Gulf of Mexico JIP Leg II, Japan Nankai Trough Drilling and Testing, Korea UBGH1 & UBGH2, India NGHP01 & NGHP02 and China GMGS1 & GMGS2. Lastly Dr. Collett drafted recommendations for Marine Methane Hydrate Field Research Plan.

After the presentation, Dr. Collett also visited the equipments and relevant testing facilities involving some experiments independently developed by Guangzhou Center for Gas Hydrate Research, including the experiment of natural gas hydrate synthesis and thermodynamics, methane hydrate replacement by carbon dioxide, CO2 separation, experimental simulation of natural gas hydrate exploitation, gas hydrate inhibitor and solid storage and transportation of gas hydrate. The experts highly appreciated these advance facilities independently developed by GIEC.

Dr. Timothy S. Collett is a Senior Scientist in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and is currently a Professor in the Department of Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines.  He has been project chief of the North Slope of Alaska Gas Hydrate Project since 1985.  Collett was a Co-Chief Scientists and Operational Manager for the 2006 India NGHP Expedition-01 gas hydrate research project.  Collett was a Co-Chief scientist of the international cooperative gas hydrate research project that was responsible for drilling dedicated gas hydrate production research wells in the Mackenzie Delta of Canada under the Mallik 1998 and 2002 efforts.  Collett sailed as the Logging Scientist on the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Legs 164 and 204 gas hydrate research expeditions.  Collett was the logging scientist on the Gulf of Mexico JIP Gas Hydrate Research Expedition in 2005 and was the Co-Chief of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 311, the Gulf of Mexico JIP Leg II drilling project in 2009 and the Korean UBGH2 Expedition in 2010. Collett was the Principal Investigator responsible for organizing and conducting the 1995 and 2008 USGS National Oil and Gas Assessment of natural gas hydrates.
