The workshop organized by Helmholtz-Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Joint Research Group with the topic of “Characterization and Energy Production Strategies of Gas Hydrate Deposition in the Northern South China Sea” was convened from 21th to 22th April in Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC), CAS. Four German experts from GEOMAR and more than fifty scientists and graduated students from South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO), Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS), Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology , Hong Kong Polytech University and GIEC participated in the event.
BAI Yu, deputy director of science and technology of GIEC, gave a welcome speech. Dr. Matthias Haeckel and Dr. Lihua Liu introduced the background of the joint research group and review of the 2ndproject year. Twenty scientists from leading research groups introduced their advanced work related to gas hydrates. The presentations included experimental and numerical researches of natural gas production, signals and numerical modeling of biogeochemical reactions of methane related to hydrates reservoir.
The next step of cooperative research of the project had been decided. The participants visited the gas hydrate Laboratory after discussion, and were deeply impressed by the high-level experimental facilities.
The workshop was a complete success. It facilitates the academic exchanges between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German academic community and provided a planform for domestic and overseas scholars studying gas hydrate to communicate. It also has laid a good foundation for the further cooperation in the related field.
