Professor Lars Johanning from The University of Exeter was invited to deliver an online academic report

2022-04-25

On April 22, 2022, the visiting scientist under the CAS President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) for 2021, Chair of Ocean Technology at the University of Exeter, Professor Lars Johanning made an online academic report: Numerical simulation and experimental measurements of coupled moored systems. The seminar was initiated and hosted by PENG Wen, the associate researcher of ocean energy research Lab at GIEC. More than 90 participants from inside and outside GIEC attended the seminar via webinar.

Professor Lars Johanning outlined field and tank measurements of complex coupled moored systems, discussed the difficulties of in situ monitoring, and presented analysis techniques of fully dynamic mooring simulation tools. The presentation focused in particular on simulation studies implemented using the commercial fully dynamic simulation software OrcaFlex TM and compared the numerical results with field and tank measurements. In addition, Prof. Lars Johanning introduced a novel mooring shock absorber and the nonlinear mooring system designed for 500kW Sharp-Eagle wave energy converter. After report, the participants actively asked questions and discussed with Prof. Lars Johanning about some related problems of wave energy mooring system.

This seminar attracted extensive attention from researchers in the field of wave energy, and effectively promoted the CAS International talents platform and the CAS President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) program.

Professor Lars Johanning received PhD from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in 2003. He is a leading researcher with international recognition in the field of ocean energy and technology with a focus on hydrodynamics and mooring systems. Prof. Lars Johanning is academic lead of the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Group and a selected Senator at the University of Exeter. Prof. Lars Johanning has longstanding relation with Chinese organizations focusing on Research & Development of UK-China partnerships in Offshore Renewable Energy.
