South African Delegation Visits GIEC

2026-04-02

On March 22, a delegation jointly organized by the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition visited the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The two sides held in-depth discussions on technologies related to the electric vehicle industrial chain and prospects for cooperation. Lyu Jiancheng, Director General of the Institute, received the delegation.

The delegation comprised representatives from government, universities, research institutions, and industry. The visit is focused on the field of electric vehicle manufacturing, power batteries, energy storage systems, charging infrastructure, and related capacity building.

Director General Lyu Jiancheng noted that China and South Africa share significant potential for cooperation in the energy transition. Delegation leader Mbangiseni Mabudafhasi, Director: Power at the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, echoed this view. He spoke highly of the existing collaboration between the Institute and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of South Africa, and expressed hope to further expand technical cooperation with more South African institutions.

During the visit, the delegation toured the Institute's V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) demonstration site. In the technical exchange session, the two sides discussed topics including the coordinated development of electric vehicles and the power grid, as well as high-energy-density battery materials.

This visit has laid a solid foundation for further cooperation and injected new momentum into China-South Africa collaboration in energy science and technology.
